I graduated from The University of York in 1977 with a degree in English and Related Literatures. I specialised there in American and French Literature, as well as English Literature.

I took my PGCE also at York and then taught for 33 years in secondary schools, teaching successfully at GCSE, ‘A’ and ‘Scholarship’ Level.

For 5 years I worked as Head of an English Department and for 27 years I worked in the Senior Management Teams of schools, working at all levels therein up to Head Teacher Level.

My passion is teaching English, having always looked upon Literature as life-enhancing and the subject that most takes account of the student and his or her own experiences. It encourages moral, spiritual and ethical growth and, for me at least, was an awful lot more fun than any other subject.

I have developed a fascination for the Russian classics and they are not a light undertaking; they demand time. My other love is music. I’ve sung in choirs since I was a child and played acoustic guitar from the age of 14. I always wanted to learn the piano and retirement has allowed me to make a start on this.
